Material Handling Equipment

The material Handling in operations management and production is the process. That includes the basic operations in the removal, movement, storage, protection and control of raw materials, intermediate goods. That are still in the process of production or finished goods in process of manufacture, warehousing, distribution and disposal. In that operation, necessary materials handling equipment. That is appropriate so that materials can be handle efficiently achieve the goal safely and meet. The needs of the production until finally also meets the needs of customer.

The Selection of Materials Handling Equipment

Currently an awful lot of material handling equipment for a wide range of needs process material handling. So we need to choose which equipment is best suited for our materials handling needs. The selection of materials handling equipment or material handling equipment is an important decision. Because it will affect the cost and efficiency of material handling system in itself. Factors to consider in choosing this material handling equipment include the following:

Material Properties

The first important consideration is the nature of the Material or materials will be handle. Its nature can be solid, liquid or gas as well as the size, shape and weight of the material. Please also note whether the ingredients we are going to move the materials that are toxic, corrosive or brittle. The properties of different materials require different equipment and methods as well.

Layout and Characteristics of the building

The next factor is the factor of availability of space for handling. Level height of ceiling (ceiling) can be a low barrier for certain tools such as Hoist and Crane. The columns of the building in a certain place will also limit the size of the equipment will be use. If the building of multi-store buildings is use. Then the equipment use will also vary with the building has only one floor. The layout or layout facilities on certain types of surgery (continue, intermittent, fixed position and group) also determines. The type of the materials handling equipment shall be use. The capacity of the floors on a building is also very helpful in selecting the best material handling to be used.

Flow of Production Flow

If the flow of production fairly constant (unchanging) between two fixed positions or almost unchanged. Then we can use a fixed equipment such as Conveyor or Launch (chute). But when the production flow is not constant and ever changing from one point. To another then the equipment moving truck or trolley-like would be a better choice.

Consideration of Costs

Consideration of costs is one of the most important considerations in the selection of material handling equipment/materials. The factors referred to above can narrow the range of the selection of the appropriate equipment, while costs can help take the decision last May elections. Some elements of cost that needs to be considered when making comparisons between equipment that can handle the same load. Investment costs as the original purchase, the cost of maintenance and operation costs are the costs that should be considered. Taking into account and compare the total cost on each equipment is considered, we can be more rational in making decisions so as to produce a more appropriate decision.

Nature of Operations

Material handling equipment selection also depends on the nature of the operation such as whether the handling of such materials is temporary or permanent, whether the flow continuous (Continue) or intermittent (intermittent) flow pattern or materials/ the material is vertical or horizontal.

Technical factors

The selection of material handling equipment/materials also depends on technical factors such as the dimensions of the door and the ceiling, floor space and floor conditions as well as the structural strength of the building.

The reliability of the Equipment

The reliability of the equipment and the reputation of the supplier (equipment manufacturer) as well as after-sales service also played an important role in selecting material handling equipment.

In general, material handling equipment or material handling equipment can be classified into two categories namely Fixed Path Equipment and Variable Path Equipment.

  • Fixed Path Equipment, Fixed Path Equipment are fixed line equipment such as conveyors, monorail devices and launch equipment.

  • Variable Path Equipment (Variable Path Equipment), Variable Path Equipment or Variable Path Equipment Moving equipment that has no limits in the direction of motion. Such equipment includes trucks, forklifts, cranes and tractors.

In addition to being classified as a Fixed Path and Variable Path, Material Handling Equipment can also be classified into 3 main categories, namely:

Conveyor

The conveyor used to deliver material or material of a 2 point a fixed workplace. Conveyor are commonly used in continuous production operations or mass production. There are several types of conveyor roller, conveyor, namely wheels and conveyor belts. The decision to use the Conveyor should be considered with caution because the cost of installation of the conveyor is high enough and also less flexible.

Truck industry

Industrial trucks are more flexible when compared to the Conveyor as it can move between various points and not be permanent placed in places that remain. Industrial truck is suitable for the production of intermittent and to handle materials with different sizes and shapes. These kinds of trucks including industries such as industrial trucks driven by human power, electric power or power machines (with fuel).

Crane and Hoist

The crane is a type of machine which generally come with rope or wire rope, lifting chain. Crane can lift and lower materials vertically. Then move it horizontally so much used to lift heavy objects and move it to another place. Hoist (Hoist) is a device used for lifting and lowering loads through the drum or wheel lift around ropes or chains that wrapped. Along with its development, currently there are manually operated Hoist or operated by electric power. Hoist normally used indoors (indoor) and Crane (Crane) widely used outdoors (outdoor). Crane and Hoist can be used in the production of which is intermittent (dotted) or Continue (continuous).
