Setting up background and purpose of the project

In fiscal 2002, a new course of study incorporating the utilization of information technology (IT) was enforced, and it is continuously improving IT-based education. Currently, broadband network connectivity and computer introduction to schools and classrooms are being promoted with the aim of completion in FISCAL 2005, and according to a survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 99.5% of all public schools are connected to the Internet (at the end of FISCAL 2003), and the environmental aspects of IT use are remarkable.

In response to the enhancement of such hardware aspects, efforts to make effective use of IT for school education are being promoted in various places. However, at present, most of them are used in information education and comprehensive learning time, and there are many efforts in terms of understanding support using multimedia and the Internet and learning expression methods, but the use for general subject education has not progressed as expected.

On the other hand, tablet PCs were released by each company in the fall of 2002, and it has been expected to be used in the education field. Tablet PCs use pen input as a standard input means, and in addition to the functions of ordinary PCs, there are advantages such as direct operation with a pen, writing of characters, and direct drawing of figures, and it was expected to develop and disseminate educational content that makes use of these.

However, there are only a few electronic teaching materials sold for Tablet PCs, such as Kanji drills, and there is an overwhelming shortage. Although it is possible to use teaching materials developed for ordinary PCs on tablet PCs, it is difficult to say that tablet PC can be used for most conventional electronic teaching materials for selective answer input. In these electronic teaching materials, learners cannot describe their own way of thinking, and the thought process and the calculation result process in the middle cannot utilize the effectiveness of the handwritten operation of the tablet PC, such as using paper (notebook) and pencil and selecting and inputting only the final answer.

1. 2 purpose and aim

The purpose of this project is to investigate the requirements of electronic teaching materials using handwriting input of Tablet PCs that can be used in general subject education, to create a prototype of handwritten electronic teaching materials that meet the requirements, and to verify its effectiveness by applying them to school practical classes and independent /home learning.

Currently, there are very few learning software on the market for Tablet PCs, and even in the class practice using tablet PCs that have been implemented so far, handwritten characters and figures are used as they are. This is considered to be a factor that it is difficult for non-specialized engineers to incorporate this function into teaching materials and use it, although the tablet PC incorporates a handwriting recognition function. In addition, handwriting recognition implemented in tablet PCs uses a technology that can recognize characters expected by users even in messy writing methods and incorrect stroke order, but in educational applications, it is not always desirable that characters are recognized even in a messy and wrong stroke order.

In this project, based on these issues, the following items were set as initial achievement targets.

by pen touch operation, you can enter answers by hand instead of selection formula, and automatic scoring is possible, not only can the child recognize the characters written, but also determine whether or not it is the correct way of writing and present the correct way of writing, IT IS POSSIBLE TO WRITE FREELY BY HANDWRITING TO ELECTRONIC TEACHING MATERIALS, AND TO BE ABLE TO SUPPORT THE THOUGHT PROCESS ON A TABLET PC, it can also be used from the internet environment and can be used for home study and self-study environment, the ability of teachers in the field to create and customize teaching materials.

in this project, we will set such a goal, develop a prototype after clarifying the requirements of specific teaching materials by incorporating the opinions of field teachers and educators, and verify the effectiveness of the prototype teaching materials and the problems to be solved in the future.

1. 3 expected educational effects

by using a pc that can write a tablet pc, it can be expected to take advantage of both the advantages of analog notebooks and pencils that can be described as it is, and the advantages of digital that makes it easy to store, reproduce, and analyze data called pcs in the following fields.

(1) kanji learning field

A. kanji stroke order

It takes a lot of time and difficulty to judge whether the stroke order that I am writing is suitable for the stroke order of the Chinese character. Teachers may be able to teach children if they take a closer look at what they write when learning the stroke order, but it is actually impossible. It can be said that there was no fundamental teaching method.
By creating a teaching material that can match handwriting entered on a Tablet PC with model characters, it is possible to determine whether the input stroke order is correct. This allows children to learn stroke order individually.


it is also effective in enhancing the learning motivation, because the correctness of the entered kanji itself can be immediately matched. though the conventional pencil and notebook method can be scored by oneself, it is difficult to maintain the child's willingness to learn. the grade is a third party (in this case, it will be a tablet pc.) it is easier to maintain a sense of tension and motivation. in addition, since you do not grade yourself, you can eliminate your own thoughts. and, it was not possible to score the correctness of the result by taking into consideration the correctness of the process of stroke order by the conventional method, and the effect on the kanji learning can be expected very much.

(2) computational learning field

as in the kanji learning field, by using the handwriting recognition function for calculation problems such as stroke and fractional calculation, it is possible to immediately confirm the correctness of the answer and to judge the calculation process. since it is possible to confirm the wrong part by oneself like this, it is possible to maintain the motivation of the child and to improve the calculation ability by the self-study.

(3) free notes

it can be called a digital notebook that can freely enter handwritten characters and lines as it is. you can describe your thoughts as they are in the same way as conventional notebooks. this is a field which was difficult in the existing pc. free characters and figures that could only be left on the analogue of paper and notebooks can be left as digital data. since it can be described on pc, it is easy to project and present with a projector as it is, and it is easy to reuse the data.

As mentioned at the beginning, the fusion of analog and digital can be carried out by using a tablet PC. If you use a PC, it will be one answer to opinions such as weakening your writing ability.
