The project management lifecycle has five phases: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closing.

Some activities take less time than expected, and some activities take longer than expected, which is to be expected. A developer might tell a project manager that it takes 3 hours to create a web page, although it is expected to take 10 hours. Similarly, an activity is expected to take 5 hours, but takes 8 hours. Therefore, daily tracking is useful, but it must be viewed from the perspective of the progress of the entire project.
When a project manager compares activities completed each week with those planned to be completed, stakeholders will focus on the milestones in the planning and delivery of the entire project.
