Several key factors for project management success

The first contact with the systematized project management method, from three years ago, when our department boss arranged an internal training, sharing is from lenovo a senior project director, had to say that the content is very thorough, just 2 hours for me is simply the top.

Prior to this, i was only in scattered contact with some project management methods, such as project projects, project schedules, repeats, and so on, and did not form a systematized methodology. so when the project is started independently, there will always be such a problem, very headache and do not know how to solve.

the project management approach has had a huge impact on my career, and since then i've been incorporating it into my work, winning again and again. in fact, for non-professional project managers, mastering the principle of "people plus process" is equivalent to mastering the secret of project success.

here are some of the key factors that have influenced project management success from my years of experience:

Stakeholder support

Larger companies will have n more than one project in preparation or implementation, if you want to lead what project, will need to first obtain some resources, such as capital, manpower, technology, we can think about these resources of the decision-makers who are, department managers, directors, ceos ... then there are the beneficiaries, project execution stakeholders, and so on.

How to win the support of stakeholders, in addition to peacetime and everyone to make good relations, but also in the project launch stage, invite stakeholders to participate in the project, to convey the status quo and vision of the project, to obtain the public commitment of stakeholders. many projects involve multiple people or cross-functional collaboration, and project members have other, more core tasks, and it is critical to get the support of key players such as department bosses and bosses if you want everyone to go all out.

Detailed time-advance schedule

How the project unfolds, we need to do detailed planning, recommend the use of Gantt chart way. Gantt chart generally contains work matters, owner, delivery time, time span and other dimensions, can clearly show the progress of the implementation of the entire project, and through Gant diagram we can push back the deadline of each node. The following image is a Gant diagram made with Excel.

With the development of the software industry, there are now many online Gantt diagram tools, the following image is the Work tile project management tools in the Gantt diagram view, more suitable for team-to-team collaboration.

Control of critical paths

Critical path is the longest path that a project needs from start to finish, such as an it project where the requirements → design→ development→ testing, → deployment, one job must wait for another to end, such as missing a job on the critical path, for example, if the design is not completed on time, it will eventually lead to a delay for the entire project.

Focus on the key path of the project, we need to check the completion of sub-projects on a regular basis, if there is a risk of extension, to find the relevant docking person in a timely manner. if there are no project collaboration tools in-house, it is best to hold a weekly or half-monthly progress communication meeting to synchronize completions and possible risks. as shown below, kanban is a good project task management tool.

Quick re-entry, result-oriented

Many project leaders will be in the re-market meeting to talk about, only to explain the good results of the project and to keep a close mouth about the existing problems, which completely deviates from the original intention of the resumption. the project's re-entry should be results-oriented, including goal achievement analysis, problems, suggestions for improvement, etc., which also requires the project to be stated at the time of launch.
